Since 2025, major deals such as Johnson & Johnson's $14.6 billion acquisition of Intra-Cellular Therapies and AbbVie's $1.2 billion acquisition of Gilgamesh's antidepressant bretisilocin have highlighted the pharmaceutical industry's commitment to this sector.
Traditional antidepressants, such as SSRIs, suffer from limitations such as slow onset of action and significant side effects, but innovative therapies are disrupting this landscape. In 2019, esketamine hydrochloride nasal spray was approved for treatment-resistant depression. In 2022, Auvelity, the first oral antidepressant with a novel mechanism in over 60 years, was launched, offering onset of action within one week. In 2023, Zurzuvae became the first oral medication for postpartum depression in adults, relieving symptoms within three days. These drugs, through novel mechanisms such as NMDA receptor antagonism and GABAA receptor modulation, precisely address the pain points of traditional medications, providing patients with more options.
Currently, the R&D landscape continues to surge. Domestic companies are also accelerating their development efforts. Jibeier's JJH201501 has entered Phase 3 clinical trials, and Luye Pharma's LY03021 has completed the first patient enrollment in Phase 1. With in-depth research into the pathogenesis of depression, treatments for depression are evolving toward faster onset, greater precision, and greater safety, further addressing unmet medical needs.
